alison came home from school today
with terrible news - a young girl who she played with
just fourteen years old - had surrendered her soul to eternity

bridget was sweet - she loved to have fun
she was in the ninth grade - her life had just begun
not a great swimmer - but she wasn't one to give up
and she'd smile while trying

all of my horror and all of my anger
      turning me, spinning me around
good reasons nowhere to be found

if we could love a little more - care a little more
give someone the benefit of a doubt
take the time a little more - be kind a little more
who knows why these things happen, but to open our eyes

my daughter alison came home from school
and taught me a lesson
of family and fate, and the time that we waste
now i'm counting my blessings

don't get me wrong, there are times in our lives
when our problems are hard to call challenges
but in more perspective - and out of respect
let's adjust where we put all the emphasis
and do better things

all our horror and all of our anger
      turning us, spinning us 'round
good reasons nowhere to be found

if we could love a little more - care a little more
give someone the benefit of a doubt
take the time a little more - be kind a little more
who knows why these things happen, but to open our eyes

my daughter alison came home from school and taught me a lesson
